Kodi, NAS, Torrent and VPN Pi Setup

Kodi, NAS, Torrent and VPN Pi Setup

watch I have just moved house and put some of my time off at Christmas to good use setting up some things on my home network to manage my XBMC/Kodi as well as providing Samba and NFS NAS for both backing up files and serving as the location of my media library, all accessible with a private home VPN connection using a couple or Raspberry Pis.

click The basic set up is that there is a Pi running Kodi connected to the TV in one room and then there are 2 more Pis plugged in next to the router. The 2 Pis by the router are headless so are controlled by SSH only and these serve as the VPN, NAS and Torrent servers.

see url I decided to opt for the 2 Pis to do this as running Samba as well as torrenting or heavy usage on a single Pi will use all the available memory and not work very well, Pis aren't ideal for using as a NAS device but they are cheap and easy to set up and perfectly adequate for my needs.

Although the read and write speed of the Pi that serves as the NAS device is not great the whole lot works pretty well and as I spend quite alot of time working away from home it is useful to be able to access the files that I do not keep on my laptop.
